Can the US be weened from the WallMart Economic Model, greed & consumption of low cost nonessential purchases?

The problem with well-made clothing, furniture and housewares are that they are expensive. While I am content to wait and save my money to buy well-made things, not everyone can. Americans have become used to a throw-away culture. I don't see it changing anytime soon.
